Last week, the Belgian LegalTech Initiative officially launched its first Belgian LegalTech Map during a well-attended event that brought together company lawyers, attorneys, legal tech founders and investors. The strong turnout was a clear signal: legal innovation is no longer a niche topic. It has become a strategic priority for everyone involved in the legal profession.
One of the most striking insights was the remarkable dynamism of the Belgian ecosystem. Today, the map identifies more than 85 LegalTech solutions originating in Belgium across a wide range of categories. Particularly strong areas include legal knowledge, legal practice management and document automation, while a new generation of companies is emerging in fields such as compliance, due diligence and dispute resolution.
Hosted by Deloitte Legal, the event started with the presentation of the Belgian LegalTech Initiative and the unveiling of the LegalTech Map. The discussion then moved beyond the numbers during a panel discussion moderated by Anaïs De Boulle (Deloitte), bringing together different perspectives from across the ecosystem. Erik Valgaeren (OVB), Rik Van Esch (Emma Legal), Lucas Stoops (6 Degrees Capital) and Julie Dutordoir (IBJ-IJE) shared their views on how company lawyers, attorneys, LegalTech providers and investors can collectively contribute to a stronger and more connected ecosystem.
For the IBJ-IJE, the importance of this initiative lies in what it makes possible: greater visibility, greater transparency and stronger connections between the stakeholders shaping the future of legal services. We want to help our members better understand the market, navigate a rapidly evolving landscape and make informed choices about AI and LegalTech, while maintaining the professional judgement that remains at the heart of our profession.
The Belgian LegalTech Map is intended as a living resource: a first framework focused on Belgium’s home-grown LegalTech, open to feedback, refinement and future growth. We are pleased to support this initiative alongside Deloitte Legal, LegalTech Match, OVB, Avocats.be and the DPA, and we look forward to contributing to its evolution. Building a strong ecosystem requires collaboration, curiosity and a willingness to learn from one another. Judging by the energy in the room, that journey is already well underway!
